Hi there!
I'm Gillian, the maker behind Hey Ging. I’ve worked as a hairstylist for over 20 years, actually it's the only job I’ve ever had. It's the only thing that ever stole my heart and my full attention until I took my first ceramics class. It started as a way to be creative on my own, in my own space, loosing myself in the quiet of the spinning wheel and wet clay on my hands. Slowly all my kitchen wares have been replaced by things I’ve made and I’m finding more enjoyment drinking my morning beverage (dirty adaptogen blends) or eating my lunch (I love grain bowls!) from these unique handmade pieces of pottery.
I’m inspired by the most eclectic things. Desert sunsets, old cafe racers and beat up leather jackets. 1970’s California beach culture, the fringed santa fe print boots my mom wore in the 80’s. The juxtaposition of neons and neutrals. The arrogant beauty of 1920s cafe society. I’ll stop there, but I could go on……
I’ve recently moved from Los Angeles to San Diego, being in this new slower paced city, I’ve found myself having more time to spend in the studio and at the wheel, more time to progress and explore. And best of all more time to make pieces to share with you. I hope they bring you just as much joy in all of your own everyday rituals.
A note on the name… The name Ging came from my little cousin who decided Ging Ging was easier to say than Gillian. Since then my whole family, every child, and my oldest friends all call me Ging. Prononced with a “J” and rhymes with “Ding”. So if you ever see me around town feel free to say “Hey, Ging!”
